Too often, Bible study materials used in the Philippines
are merely imported from the West. Some of these may be translated
into Filipino dialects, but they do not connect to the Filipino
at the heart level. Therefore, REACH felt an urgent need for
materials written by Filipinos for Filipinos, that incorporate
their rich heritage to convey discipleship principles.
Within this framework, REACH developed the Discipleship Family
Series. It is a progressive book series that facilitates a
new Christian’s growth to discipleship. Each book in
the series is bilingual (English and Tagalog) and has a question-and-answer
format based on a Biblical passage. Each chapter has a two-part
study with a main study focused on the passage and a complementary
lesson as a special study. Memory verses serve as key lessons
for each chapter, cultural observations entitled Good News
for Filipinos, and thought-provoking quotations and illustrations
are included.
The Discipleship Family Series
DFS Introduction—Dilemma
of Choice
This study can serve a duel purpose as an evangelistic tool
with unbelievers and as an assurance of salvation with new
disciples. It also deals with common emotional struggles of
a Filipino such as, maintaining a healthy self-image; the
need for approval and acceptance—especially of family,
friends and peers; the tendency to conform so as not to be
put to shame or be a cause for scandal; yielding to different
moral and social pressures; and enslavement to seeking status.
Most people are proud of themselves as men and women of free
will who can choose their own destiny and build a sure foundation
for a secure life here on earth. The study examines how capable
people are of making the right choices or even if they are
aware that they need to make any choice in this finite life.
Chapter titles include:
• Have You Met Yourself?
• Who Claps for You?
• What Moral Patterns Do You Follow?
• Master or Slave?
• What is Love?
• What is True Success?

DFS Book 1—Welcome to the
Family of God
Lessons for this book are taken primarily from the Gospel
of John. This study helps disciples appreciate the privileges
of being a part of God's eternal family. Disciples started
their journey on the road of life by trusting their faith
in Jesus Christ, but the journey does not end there. As new
members of God's family, disciples can be assured through
the Word of God that they will find guidance as they travel
this journey.
Chapter titles include:
• Our New Self in Christ
• God, Our Heavenly Father
• A Shepherd for Wandering Sheep
• The Holy Spirit: Our Permanent Companion
• Our Brothers and Sisters in Christ

DFS Book 2—Beginning Steps
of a Disciple
This book examines the First Letter of St. John. The author
wrote this letter to encourage his readers and to share his
personal experiences of Jesus Christ with them. He wrote it
at a time of growing false religious philosophy to warn his
readers to be on guard and to stand firm in their faith. Just
as danger awaits a traveler who disregards a warning sign,
so hazards await those who reject guidance for their spiritual
journey.
Chapter titles include:
• Relationship not Religion
• Forgiveness not Self-Punishment
• Inside not Outside
• Spirit of God not Spirit of Antichrist
• Assurance not Doubt

DFS Book 3—Growth of a
Disciple
This Bible study booklet is based on 1 Thessalonians and is
designed to assist disciples in handling growing pains. When
a child is born, it is expected that he will grow. No parent
would want their child to be a baby forever. But still, parents
who give a child a right start are not guaranteed a healthy
adult. Parents must have the ability to foresee future difficulties
and prepare in advance for such times. So it is in the spiritual
realm. Disciples need to know and experience the privileges
that come with new birth. In addition, new disciples must
be prepared for the responsibilities and trials that lay ahead.
They must be fully equipped to face the challenges of the
life ahead.
Chapter titles include:
• Continuing as a Disciple
• Approved by Whom?
• What to Prepare For
• Responsible Christian Love
• The King is Coming!

DFS Book 4—Tests of a Disciple
Many people dislike tests nor desire to face trying times.
But examinations serve an important purpose. A teacher needs
a gauge to determine how much students have learned. The athlete
is tested for endurance and stamina to prepare him for tough
competition. The soldier trains through exercises and drills
to make him fit for battle and a patient is examined to help
the doctor make an accurate diagnosis. Hardships, suffering
and faithfully answering the challenges of life are tests
that a Christian should expect. They are a means for discipline
of character and training in Christian living. This Bible
study guide based on the Book of Philippians explores five
major arenas where Christians constantly battle. This study
will help disciples appreciate that today's pain is tomorrow's
great gain.
Chapter titles include:
• Test of Time
• Test of Personal Convictions
• Test of Service
• Test of Growth
• Test of Finances

DFS Book 5—Maturing in
Discipleship
Maturity results from steadfast growth. A mature person is
one who has fully-developed potential, reliable, and shows
consistent ways of thinking, speaking, and behaving. A growing
disciple aims to reach maturity. In this study, based on the
Book of James, disciples will see how further growth that
leads to maturity can take place as disciples develop a proper
response to varying life situations. Disciples will learn
how to confront adversities that try their faith, how to relate
to other Christians who differ in their backgrounds, and how
to continue to overcome selfish tendencies while living in
an evil world. Finally disciples will learn that they must
demonstrate a faith that is integrated in all aspects of daily
living.
Chapter titles include:
• Aiming for Maturity
• Putting Faith to Work
• Taming the Tongue
• Overcoming the World
• Facing Life’s Perplexities
