Book 6 Undergoes Field Testing

The Discipleship Family Series is a bible study series that can facilitate your Christian growth as a disciple, from infancy to leading a disciplemaking ministry. The series is written by Filipinos for Filipinos. Thus, it connects themes of each lesson to cultural values.

Book 6 in the series is currently being field tested by bible study groups within the REACH ministry throughout the Philippines. The book is entitled, Foundations of A Disciple’s Security. It covers the first eight chapters of the Gospel of Luke. The rest of the Gospel of Luke will be examined in Books 7 and 8. Amongst the four Gospels, Luke captures best the method Jesus employed to make disciples. Moreover, Luke presents Jesus as the Son of Man who heals spiritually and physically, and who welcomes all of society: the rich and the poor, the learned and the outcast.

Each group does the bible study then critiques the questions for relevancy and clarity, and for accuracy of the translation. These comments are collected by Jun Pedroso, REACH, Inc.'s Communications Assistant, and synthesized by RMI's Intercultural Development Specialist, Nita Lacdan, who is tasked to design and draft the study, as well as make the necessary changes from the field test. Gene Tabor lends helpful insights and corrections, while Becky Jimenez has assisted in translation and formatting.

Field testing drafts of the DFS is a critical part of the process before finalizing the studies. The groups represent a broad spectrum of Filipinos from urban to rural, students to professionals, as well as regional and cultural differences from north to south.

Developing Biblically sound, discipleship-oriented, and culture-sensitive materials is a long and arduous task. But the result is materials that have changed lives and produced growing disciples. The Discipleship Family Series is also being effectively used in India, Hongkong, and Mexico. It should also reach, hopefully, other developing countries who share a similar cultural context, and those who desire to produce their own bible studies.

Currently, the available books in the series include:

  • An Introduction—Dilemma of Choice
  • Book 1—Welcome to the Family of God (John)
  • Book 2—Beginning Steps of a Disciple (1 John)
  • Book 3—Growing as a Disciple (1 Thessalonians)
  • Book 4—Tests of a Disciple (Philippians)
  • Book 5—Maturing in Discipleship (James)

Future Books include:

  • Book 6—Foundations of a Disciple’s Security (Luke 1-8)
  • Book 7—Foundations of a Disciple’s Ministry (Luke 9-18)
  • Book 8—Foundations of a Disciple’s Victory (Luke 19-24)
  • Book 9—The Discipling Community (Ephesians)
  • Book 10—Growing as a Leader (2 Timothy)

We hope these studies will be a rewarding experience as you deepen in your relationship with God and become more intimately involved in God’s command to go and make disciples of all nations.

Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you: and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.
-Matthew 28:18-20
